Invacare Athlete Hailed as Canadian of the Year by Macleans Magazine

ELYRIA, Ohio–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Jan. 7, 2005–Team Invacare athlete Chantal Petitclerc was named Canadian of the Year by Macleans, a Canadian news magazine.

Petitclerc, a championship wheelchair racer, was honored for her unknown reserve of strength and determination. In 2004 alone, she won five gold medals, set three world records and set one Paralympic record at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Greece. She also won the gold medal in the 800-meter race at the Athens 2004 Olympic Games Wheelchair Track Exhibition Events.

“We are extremely proud of Chantal. She is an excellent athlete and this is a well-deserved honor. Chantal had an exceptional year in 2004 and I’m sure that we will see much more from her,” said Mary Carol Peterson, Invacare Top End(R).

Maclean’s Canadian of the Year is chosen by the magazine’s senior editorial staff. However, the decision is based largely on input from its readers. According to editor Anthony Wilson-Smith, “The most important thing is that he or she should have made an outstanding contribution to Canadian life in the last year.” Finalists for the honor included politicians, authors and activists.
